The Shepherd Crook has been the staple accessory of herdsman since ancient times. Primarily used as a walking stick for treading uneven ground, the crook features a rounded head commonly used for rescuing and corralling livestock. A crook might also have been used to hold a sheep in place while the animal was shorn. Originating in ancient Egypt as a threshing tool, a Scourge is a whip or lash generally used to inflict severe corporal punishment or self-mortification. The typical scourge has several thongs fastened to a handle; at the end of which are tied thick, heavy knots. The Roman scourge, also called a flagellum, was often braided with a number of small metal pieces causing punishment to be particularly dreadful. A flogger with hooks at the ends was called a scorpion while one with nine thongs was called a cat o' nine tails.
