The Pilum is a heavy javelin commonly used by Roman Legionaries in ancient times. The typical scourge has several thongs fastened to a handle; at the end of which are tied thick, heavy knots. The Roman scourge, also called a flagellum, was often braided with a number of small metal pieces causing punishment to be particularly dreadful. A flogger with hooks at the ends was called a scorpion while one with nine thongs was called a cat o' nine tails.
