Yes, I figured that much on my own. Sixteen years of soaking up literature has that effect on people, but I've never heard that term used as an adverb, and I wanted a more precise explaination.

There is actually a good reason for the handgrip to run horizontally instead of vertically. When designing the knight shield, we did consider both options but in the end opted for the vertical bar for two reasons. 1) it allows the minifig to bring the shield closer to his body without altering the angle of the shield. This is an important point when facing an enemy because it does not compromise the level of protection. 2) Holding a shield with a straight arm works for a smaller shield. But for something as big and heavy as the goblin shield, balance becomes an issue because the minifig can easily topple over.
