As for me, I hope those LEGO boxes get here tomorrow because waiting makes me anxious.

Well, since you cross-posted with me, I'll have to re-post this here:

Glad I could be of assistance. ;)

Anyways, while you guys were playing Diablo III, UltimatBlitz managed to achieve something just short of miraculous by convincing me to actually sign up for an MMORPG. The MMO in question is Final Fantasy XIV, and those who have known me for a while here know that I'm ALMOST as big a Final Fantasy fan as Omi. After spending about 3 hours downloading and setting it up via digital distribution (10Gb @ 1MB/sec, on Squenix's end), I got on, and I actually like it, for the most part, even though I've managed to get myself killed 3 times already...

I went in knowing almost nothing about the game or world, hoping to be able to use knowledge & experience gained by playing Final Fantasy VII - X as well as more real-time RPGs like Diablo II and Torchlight, and for the most part, I've been able to manage. Now if only Miss Blitz would get on when I'm playing sometime so I could join her Free Company (semi-official in-game player guilds) and give me a few pointers, that would be great.

Anyways, I actually managed to make Level 10 in just 8 hours of play, which, based on the times I messed around in World of Warcraft and Everquest when some of my friends were trying to get me to join them in those games, is lightning fast for an MMO.

Anyways, here's a screenshot I took of my Female Hyur (human) character, Laura Beinbrech, shortly after completing a quest in the deserts outside of Ul'dah:

...Doesn't she just look totally Hardcore. ;9

More like hardorable.

As for MMOs, I was really into WoW for awhile. I wasn't good at it, and I never got past level 65, but I played it a lot. A whole lot.

Hardorable, I'm going to have to remember that one.

One thing I wish FF XIV had that Warhammer Online does is the ability to change the color of your outfits (for a fee, of course).... I just completed my level 10 class quest, and one of the rewards was a pair of RED thigh-high boots that don't go all that well with the rest of the outfit. On the plus side, this Final Fantasy game actually has Macuahuitli as weapons available for warrior classes: A Wooden Macuahuitl (like what the Jaguar Warriors used for training) was also one of the quest awards... That means I can rock it Aztec style, OOOH YEEEAAAH!

Sorry I can't make those smaller, my internet is being really bad and I can't even use my mouse right now, just the touch pad.

Blast! Could have made it four in a row. Guess that's what I get for going to see Wicked with my girlfriend and then playing Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.

...and back to the shadows goes this little ninja...

I guess I'll run the FFXIV benchmark program to see if I can run it. I doubt I'll be able to. God I wish I could put a good graphics card in my laptop.

Ultima (can I use that as a nickname, since UltimatBlitz is rather clumsy to type all the time?), Nice character! She looks kinda like a catgirl version of Rei Ayanami. ;) ....Of course I realized just now that Laura (my char) looks like a grown-up, brunette version of Hoshino Ruri from Martian Successor Nadesico (maybe I should install TwitcTV or some other desktop recording software and make some "Naze Nani Eorzia" machinima in the style of Ruri's "Naze Nani Nadesico" infodump segments :p)

Also nice to see that they've decided to allow the cat-people in this game to actually be able to wear clothes.

Anyways, on a somewhat more serious note, some of you may have noticed that most of my custom game characters are (a) female, (b) named Laura and (c) Blue-eyed brunettes. There is a reason for this.

I've recently, thanks to some friends and online resources, realized that I'm what is known as Gender Nonconforming, with a bit of Genderfluid in there as well. Basically what that means is that I defy the standard (and IMO, overly rigid) male gender roles, and have since I was little (I wanted a Rainbow Brite doll when I was in elementary school, and was more interested in arts and crafts than sports, for one thing). Essentially, I'm not just "in touch" with my "feminine side" but I've fully embraced it, and in some ways I could be considered the inversion of a tomboy.

Thing is, if a GIRL wants to play sports, likes monster trucks and do other "boy" interests, then she's praised for being "assertive", "independent" and "true to herself", but any BOY who likes playing with dolls, likes artsy-crafty stuff and other "girl" interests is a "sissy", "creep" and a "loser" (among much worse things), and I got horribly bullied at school because I wasn't "manly" enough, and most of the teachers (at least in Elementary school) turned a blind eye to it because my "deviance" needed to be "corrected" (as my second grade teacher actually wrote on one story I wrote that involved Rainbow Brite, 1980's Buck Rogers and me as the Greatest Amercian Hero... Yeah, I was writing crossover fanfic WAY before it was cool </hipster>).

When I discovered video games that allowed you to play as a FEMALE protagonist in middle and high school (starting with Super Mario Bros. 2), it was a godsend to me, because they provided a safe place to allow my girly side to run free. Hence all my crossplaying.

Until recently, I thought I was just weird, since I didn't fall quite under typical cisgender, OR transgender categories, and I continued to (publicly at least) mostly suppress my true nature because I had no idea that there even WAS a third category: Gender Variant, which is for anybody who falls outside the usual gender binary (whether cis or trans), and that is when I decided that I wasn't going to hide behind a mask anymore. Of course, my wife, being a bit of a tomboy herself and willing to not just put up with my more stereotypically "feminine" traits, but to encourage many of them, is a large contributing factor in my having the courage to come out.

So there you have it! That is why I like the LEGO Friends & Disney Princess lines so much, why I crossplay in just about any videogame that allows me to, and why I like to dress up fancy and grow my hair long. This is the first public forum where I've decided to reveal this bit of information on, but it's not likely going to be the last. Feel free to PM me if you want more information (although I'm still learning myself).

@HK: I'm very much the same way. I find it very cathartic to play as a female in games.

There we go, updated, Exploring the Coil

I understand your point that this is much more accepted than the inverse you talked about, but there are still people who see this as an attack worthy point of some women't character. I'm in no way supporting the binary gender roles of our society, but I'm putting that out there.
Hikaro Takayama wrote:

Personally, I believe that this is a "third category" is a step in the right direction, but still, not good, simply because it is a "category" on the genders of humans, which can range and vary and mix in seemingly any way there is. It's human nature to categorize things to make it easier to understand, but we're past that now. Time to start looking past he old categories and just let some of the things flow.

secretly hoping Lego might make some MLP sets to go along with these. Personally my only problem with the "Friends" is their hands don't seem to turn like normal Legos, or I'd be all over them.
