Can't you just tell them it's harder than you anticipated and that you won't be able to do it after all? I don't know the rest of your LUG but they ought to understand.
Alternately can you separate it into a single small section and finish that up without having to do the same for the whole thing (right now, at least)?
Theoretcially I could try the first thing. Sadly, I have a very antiquated way of looking at things and if I give my word that I'll do something, it'll get donedespite the stress it will cause me. Further, other than the money thing, I should be able to get it done. It's just more stress than I feel LEGO should be and than I anticipated.
As to your second point, what I am working on finishing now already is a portion of it. I'm only doing the main building and the hill it sits on, the two lesser buildings, the front wall, and simple landscaping (basically just pathways in the grass). At some point I'll be adding a stable, a bamboo forest in front of the gates, a shrine type area (with monkeys!) and redoing the paths with 1x1 round plates (or the new tiles if they make them in enough colors). Oh, and the inside of the hill will eventually be a burial chamber.
Stressful as this all is right now, it means I'll have the main portion of it done and won't have to worry about it. It will also mean that the thing will be able to sit in storage and I won't have to rebuild large portions like I had to this time around.
