The new LEGO shield isn't that bad. A viking shield could vary quite a lot in size. Viking shields between 24-48 inches were common, and somewhere in between (36") was the most common size. The average viking was around 65-70 inches tall, although they weren't as big-boned as minifigs. When comparing the shield diameter with a minifigs height, it's a pretty good size. However, if it is compared to a minifigs width, it should be 20-25% larger in diameter.
