I just had a request for BF shield prints:

Maybe an upside down V like the Spartans had. Not the Halo Spartans though!

Just sharing my thoughts. :)

More accurately known as a Lambda, which stands for Lakedamonia, the region of Sparta.

Regardless, this would be a nice print to have.

Perhaps the other Hoplite symbols as well.

I would be very interested in this, i have been making my shields using decals from 40mm figures, they are a bit to small plus at the end of the day its a decal and not a printed image :(

I have 5 designs drawn up for the different color shields. If anyone wants to submit other designs/ideas, do so in this topic knowing that you may or may not get any sort of official credit for the design/suggestion.

What about a quartered pattern with a shield boss in the middle, for vikings, footmen, and such?

^ that's a good idea. There's been some evidence that Saxons had curve-faced (but otherwise viking/germanic style) shields, as I recall.

Albeit very, slightly curved. I think the larger debate is size. In my opinion, the new LEGO shield from the Minifigure series is slightly too small. And so is the Castle Skeleton/Dwarf shield. Perhaps the Technic shields from the Vikings are the right size but always seemed slightly too large for my taste. The BF Battle Shield is close - with some screen printing I suppose it could pass?

The new LEGO shield isn't that bad. A viking shield could vary quite a lot in size. Viking shields between 24-48 inches were common, and somewhere in between (36") was the most common size. The average viking was around 65-70 inches tall, although they weren't as big-boned as minifigs. When comparing the shield diameter with a minifigs height, it's a pretty good size. However, if it is compared to a minifigs width, it should be 20-25% larger in diameter.

I don't have any pictures but I have hopes some of these Greek-city state standards might be printed.
  1. Sparta: Λ (Lamda)
  2. Athens: Glaphx (goddess Athena's symbolic owl)
  3. Thebes: Heracles' club
  4. Argos: The Hydra symbol
  5. Corinth: A Pegasus
  6. Macedons: The Vergina Sun
  7. Thessaly: A bull's foot
  8. Eretria: An eye
  9. Thespiae: The Crescent of goddess Artemis
