They are normally refered to as Grenadier Caps, not helmets. They were introduced in the late 17th Century to make it easier to "sling your firelock" prior to using Grenades.

Dutch, Prussian(Brandenberg) and Danish seem to have the earliest ones. The Earliest patterns were more often made of Cloth not fur.

The British had just started using fur caps before the AWI started but the Hessians and other Germans were still using the cloth type. {:8

I'd like to second the suggestion for a Grenadier/Dragoon Helmet... Something along those lines would be perfect for a Steampunk type scenario as well as historical stuff.
