That pony came in 2 sets from 1996. Carriage Ride and Country Club. You can look up what sets a piece came in on the right side column when looking up a piece. As Omi pointed out, Lego is gonna do what Lego wants to do. I am a little miffed at their decision to make other animals look less like the horse style because now the horse looks a little out of place. Changing the dog might be the beginnings of them changing it's style, but then again, they are notorious for delaying decisions also.

Kinda like how with the Spongebob sets, Squidward had a regular fig head, but then the next wave he had his own special head? :P

There is that, but I was referring to simple ideas like making a color of horse other than Black, Brown, or White.

TLG will not be changing the horse. It is too iconic. As to why they are making the new animals larger doppelgangers of the DUPLO line - I can't really tell you. What does it mean for BrickForge? We plan on treading very carefully with new animal ideas. Our goal is to match LEGO style, but it becomes very difficult when that style keeps changing.

I personally like the flat edges, and simple look of the horse, and your animals. The new rounded shapes don't go with the horse.
