...They were Imperials; one could tell by the way they moved – the uneven gait, the slight hunch of the back, the guns they held far enough away from themselves that anyone who wished to could snatch them from their grip just by taking hold. Some went so far as to say that almost half of them were failed human test subjects that the Empire had once conducted experiments on. But they could shoot, despite the stupid way they ascended the stairs merely a step behind the other.
He had a mind to pick them off, one by one, as they arrived at his floor, which was only three more steps for the leader – The one in front, Geko corrected himself. These were Imperials, and no matter their tactical ignorance it would be the lowest rank who stood boldly before his comrades. But if there were three, it was likely that more lurked near enough to hear and come running at a shot, and so Geko held his fire, considering other options.
He adjusted his longrifle to hang more easily by its sling over his shoulder and brought his left hand to join his right on the grip of his thick revolver nestled close to his body directly in front of him. Then his decision as to a course of action was decided for him as the first Imperial, now having gained the landing, spotted Geko in the darkness. The Imperial yelped an oath and raised his rifle into a firing position...-
