problem with the heads I still wanted the smily faces to show thru so it limited me somewhat.

Nice camo and those berets are perfect!
For the faces, you could do stippling instead of stripes, making a patch pattern and enabling you to keep the paint lighter on the face, just an idea.

might be touching them up a little more to give a more "Confused" look to the camo design.

Try on a paper ... the pattern you already have, and then add patches of the stippling - it might do what you're looking for to finish these guys out.
I used the stippling on Lady-knight Rose's legs and like the variance from the lines of dry brush.
